What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

The 3-2-1 rule is a backup standard: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy off-site. It protects against hardware failure, ransomware and local disasters, and forms the basis of a resilient data strategy.

The off-site copy (often cloud) is crucial: it survives a fire, theft or ransomware that hits the primary site.

ITGS implements and verifies 3-2-1-compliant backups, with regular restore testing.

Frequently asked questions

Is cloud alone enough for backup?
A single cloud copy does not satisfy the 3-2-1 rule. Multiple copies on distinct media are needed.
